The town of Crestone has always had many community projects going on throughout the years. Projects range from cleaning up the roads of trash for Earth Day, establishing a new town park for the kids, to building a new show stage for community performances.
This year a new project is being brought forward, to captivate really just how much the members of this community love bringing their artistic talents to the table. This new project was introduced by art teacher Kristy Knight and local artist GiGi Douglas. The project will be an outer space-themed mural as a backdrop, located at the Crestone Town Park on the new wooden stage.
Gigi has been coming to Crestone Charter School (CCS) for several months now, working with the students in Kristy Knight’s art class to come up with the theme for the mural and help plan the event. The project will be Saturday May 18, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Everyone is invited. There will be free food, music, games and more.
Someone who also has helped contribute to this project is Nick Nevares, who has been very involved with this upcoming project, having discussions with town hall about this, with also helping build the wooden stage in 2023.
Another possible addition will be student performances directed by the Boredom Fighters, orchestrated by Melody Monroe. Boredom Fighters is a nonprofit dedicated to bringing kids and music together. It partners with Crestone Performances and has so far hosted one event at CCS.
Douglas has been doing community murals in the San Luis Valley for more than ten years, helping artistically-inspired students, adults and kids, bringing their passions and ideas alive for a greater good to the community.
Douglas is also doing a mural project for the Moffat Consolidated School students and community as well. That project will be the weekend before on May 11.
