Cyclists please save trails

Spring was here early.

On my hike up the South Crestone Creek trail yesterday I noticed some of the early signs of warmer weather arriving: deep tire gouges in the snow covered trail. It’s spring and the cyclists are anxious to get out.

Bikers, please take pause to think about your impact. Ice, snow and mud still cover large parts of the mountain trails and need time to dry out. In a relatively short time our footpaths can become rutted, and ever wider. Taking some perspective, most of the popular “single-track” trail areas, (areas not on roads), such as around Crested Butte, have become mountain bike sacrifice zones.

Hikers generally avoid these trails if they are forewarned. Fortunately, we are not a resort. It’s really quite nice to walk along the trails in Crestone, still. Hikers have a much different perspective, so, two-wheelers, please be mindful. Also note that motorized vehicles, which include e-bikes, are not allowed on the trails in the Baca.

Gracias!
