Library News: April

By Amy Garoutte, Northern Saguache County Library District

We are excited to report we now offer room “telephone” booths in each branch. They provide a space for private telehealth appointments. Each branch has a telehealth kit, laptop and now private space for virtual conversations with medical providers.

These booths can also be used for conducting other virtual meetings. Call the branch for more information or to make reservations.

Our New Books

Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Range Mountains: Hikes, Scrambles, Snow and Rock Climbs by Derek A. Wolfe — The book contains comprehensive descriptions for over 280 routes on 83 peaks, color photos, difficulty ratings, mileage and elevation gain statistics for each route, driving directions for trailheads, color topographical maps, and GPS coordinates for summits and parking areas.

Pearl Loves to Sing by Olivier Dunrea. Kids will enjoy reading about Pearl, who sings sleeping songs, slurping songs, quietly and loudly, all over the farm — all day long. Pearl loves, loves, loves to sing! But what will she do when she loses her voice? Olivier Dunrea lends his signature charm to another preschool conundrum and shows how the support of friends can help us get over a rough patch.

Available until August is the rediscovered work from the Nobel Prize–winning author of Love in the Time of Cholera and One Hundred Years of Solitude, by  Gabriel García Márquez, who passed away in 2014 at the age of 87. A profound meditation on freedom, regret, self-transformation, and the mysteries of love — an unexpected gift from one of the greatest writers the world has ever known.

The Hunter by the queen of Irish crime fiction Tana French will appeal to the district’s many mystery lovers. “It’s a blazing summer when two men arrive in a small village in the West of Ireland. One of them is coming home. Both of them arrived to get rich. One of them is coming to die.” Named a Most Anticipated Book of 2024 by the Washington Post, TIME Magazine, BBC, TODAY, Lit Hub, and CrimeReads

The Silver Bone by Ukraine’s most celebrated novelist, Andrey Kurkov, will also join the mystery section this month. Longlisted for the 2024 International Booker Prize, it’s a perplexing mystery that introduces rookie detective Samson Kolechko in Kyiv as he is tackling his first case, set against real life details of the tumultuous early twentieth century.

Orbital by Samantha Harvey has been described by Joshua Ferris of the New York Times as “ravishingly beautiful.” A slender novel of epic power, Orbital deftly snapshots one day in the lives of six women and men hurtling through space — not towards the moon or the vast unknown, but around our planet.

The Painter’s Daughters by Emily Howes is a beautifully written story of love, madness, sisterly devotion, and control, about the two beloved daughters of renowned 1700s English painter Thomas Gainsborough, who struggle to live up to the perfect image the world so admired in their portraits.

Ghost Town Living: Mining for Purpose and Chasing Dreams at the Edge of Death Valley by Brent Underwood is the true story of Cerro Gordo, a desolate ghost town perched high above Death Valley, and Brent’s ambitious undertaking — to bring this abandoned town back to life.

Becoming Vegetalista: My Visionary Initiation and Apprenticeship with the Plant Nations of Earth by Stephen Buhner is the story of the author’s powerful visionary episodes and his subsequent training with the plants of the high Rocky Mountains into their uses as medicines and ecological modulators for planetary health.
