Crestone Artisans Gallery: Spotlight on artist Jodi Price

Sunlight through stained glass

By Joni Franks.

I am writing this article on a cloudy day in May that feels more like winter than spring. I find myself looking forward to the month of June, which brings the summer solstice and the first day of summer. The solstice marks the shortest night and the longest day of the year and is universally treasured as a time to celebrate warmth and sunlight.

In honor of the summer sunlight, I am featuring my interview with gallery artist Jodi Price, who creates stained-glass artwork.

If you have ever witnessed the stunning effect of sunlight on stained glass, you know it is a sight to behold. As the sun’s rays penetrate through stained glass, a kaleidoscope of colors shimmer and dance, creating a brilliant spectacle. As the sunlight passes through the stained glass it interacts with the glass, creating intricate patterns and reflections.

Here is the insight Jodi shared with me about how she became an artist and the process she uses to create her one-of-a-kind pieces.

“I learned the technique of traditional stained glass in the early 1980s from a friend, and over the next couple of decades I made occasional pieces for my family and friends. I didn’t enjoy the traditional process though. My artistic career began in early 2000 when I discovered a love for geometric design, where I incorporate beads, wire, negative space, fossils and repurposed jewelry into my pieces. That creative passion carried me through years of juried art shows.”

She continues: “My family and I moved to Crestone in 2007 and I was juried into the Crestone Artisans Gallery at that time. Due to personal reasons, I pulled out but happily returned in 2021. Currently the Crestone Artisans Gallery is the only place where my work is exhibited and sold.”

To see Jodi’s amazing artwork, stop by the gallery for a visit. Check out our diverse artists’ collections of pottery, photography, mixed media art, oil paintings, jewelry, writing journals, award-winning books, whimsical prints, handmade greeting cards, flutes and so much more. Nearly all our artists are working members, which means when you pay us a visit, you will be speaking with one of the artists who is staffing the gallery.

Crestone Artisans Gallery is open seven days a week during June, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
